Tenuta MonteRosola traces its roots to the ancient La Rosola homestead, first documented in the 15th century when the hilltops of Volterra were known for its impenetrable fortress walls and the mining of radiant alabaster. Over the centuries, the land changed hands, but its identity endured. The elevation, soil and unbroken horizon still charm to this day. MonteRosola stands as one of the pioneering estates in a rare, still-wild corner of Tuscany, committed to revealing what this territory has always been quietly capable of.
Our purpose is straightforward: to produce the finest wine this land can give and to raise that standard with every harvest.
The Vineyards
Perched on a small plateau at 450 meters above sea level, Tenuta MonteRosola commands a remarkable position at the confluence of three valleys. On clear days, the mountains of Corsica appear on the western horizon, a reminder of just how close the sea really is. Sweeping views unfold in every direction with dramatic panoramas of the Tuscan countryside. This elevation is not merely scenic. Persistent breezes cool the vines through summer's heat, marine-influenced soils lend a mineral tension unique to this ridge. Long hours of Tuscan sunshine allow for slow, even ripening. The result is grapes of uncommon freshness and aromatic complexity unique to this site.
The first modern vineyard plantings came in 1999. Since then, the estate has grown to just under 25 hectares under vine, with varieties chosen to honor both the white and red wine traditions of the region. The estate also produces exceptional olive oil from rare local cultivars including Lazaro delle Guadeloupe varieties that, like the wines, tell a story available nowhere else.
Our modest scale allows every vine to be tended by hand and every bunch selected with care. Both our wines and our olive oil carry organic certification as a commitment to how we believe this land should be farmed. The results are wines of immense pleasure and quiet complexity, a clear window into the territory we are proud to call home.
The Monterosola Team
MonteRosola is led by director and winemaker Sergio Cantini, a native son of Volterra who has returned home after over a decade refining his craft in Montalcino. Sergio's connection to this landscape is deeply personal and his fingerprint is found in every decision made at MonteRosola. Sergio farms with patience and precision and always in pursuit of wines that are timeless.
Alongside Sergio, cellarmaster Dario Borghi and team work year-round as conscientious caretakers of the estate. Together, they tend the land across all seasons, guided by a shared conviction: that finesse and elegance, not force, are the truest expressions of great wine.
